When to Replace a Truck or Trailer Air Spring: Warning Signs and Compliance Guide

An air spring, also called an air bag, is a reinforced rubber bellows that replaces a traditional leaf or coil spring in an air-ride suspension. Instead of

steel absorbing road impact, compressed air inside the bag does the work, and a height control valve adds or releases air to keep ride height

consistent regardless of load. A truck or trailer typically runs four to eight air springs depending on axle configuration, and because the whole

system depends on the bag holding pressure, a single failing springaffects ride height, load distribution, and in some cases the vehicle’s brake air

supply.

How long do air springs last?

There’s no fixed FMCSA replacement interval; the rubber bellows simply wears from UV exposure, ozone, heat cycling, and road debris until it can

no longer hold ressure reliably.

fatigue faster than the same part on a steady highway route, even at similar total mileage.

Warning signs it’s time to replace

A sagging or uneven ride height is usually the first thing a driver or technician notices. If one corner of the truck or trailer sits noticeably lower than

the others, that bag isn’t holding air the way it should, whether from a slow leak, a crack, or a seam failure. A rougher ride than usual, or a

suspension that bounces more than one cycle after a bump, points the same direction: the bag has lost some of its ability to cushion and control.

Audible clues are just as reliable. A hissing sound near the bag, or an air compressor that runs more often or longer than it used to, both suggest

the system is losing pressure somewhere and compensating for it.

Visually, look for cracking or dry rot on the rubber surface, especially near the crimp where the bellows attaches to the top and bottom plates; that’s

typically where degradation shows up first. Bulging, chafing against a nearby frame member, or any separation between the bellows and its mounting

plate are all signs that failure is close, not a maintenance item to defer. Oil or fluid contamination on the bag’s surface accelerates rubber breakdown

quickly and is worth investigating even if the bag itself still looks intact.

A dull knocking sound on rough roads, especially on an empty trailer, points to worn bump stops rather than the air spring itself, but it’s worth

checking both while you’re under there, since a bag running low on pressure will bottom out against those stops more often and wear them prematurely.

FMCSA and CVSA compliance

Under 49 CFR 393.207, a deflated air suspension, whether from a system failure, a leak, or any other cause, is an out-of-service condition.

A missing rubber spring is separately called out as an out-of-service defect under §393.207(a). Inspectors also check for suspension components

that have shifted enough to contact another part of the vehicle, and for loose or missing U-bolts and mounting hardware securing the suspension

assembly.Beyond the suspension-specific criteria, a slow air leak anywhere in the system that eventually affects the vehicle’s ability to maintain air

pressure can also become a brake-system compliance issue, since the air brakes and air suspension typically draw from the same supply.

What to check and replace alongside an air spring

  • Height control (leveling) valve. A sticking or miscalibrated valve can mimic a bad air spring, causing the truck to sit too high, too low, or adjust slowly when loading. If ride height is uneven but the bags themselves look sound, check the valve and its linkage before condemning the spring.
  • Air line fittings and O-rings. When replacing an air spring, also replace the O-ring that seals the solenoid or fitting to the spring; a worn O-ring here is a common, easily missed source of a “new part still leaking” comeback.
  • Mounting hardware. Inspect brackets and bolts for corrosion or damage while the bag is off, since a damaged bracket transfers stress into the new spring the same way a damaged mounting bracket does on a brake chamber.
  • Both bags on the axle, if similar age. Replacing air springs in pairs when they’re roughly the same age avoids a second service call a few months later for the untouched side, which has typically seen the same wear cycles.

How to specify the correct replacement air spring

  • Bellows style. Sleeve (single or double convoluted) and reversible-sleeve designs aren’t interchangeable; confirm which style the axle position calls for.
  • Design height and mounting configuration. Bead plate style, stud pattern, and the bag’s height at design ride height all need to match the OEM spec, not just look similar to the old part.
  • OEM cross-reference. Air springs are typically ordered against a manufacturer part number (common families include Firestone, Goodyear, and ContiTech-style references); cross-reference from the old part’s stamped number rather than the truck’s make and model.
  • Axle position. Steer, drive, and trailer axle air springs are frequently different parts even on the same vehicle, so confirm position before ordering.
