Engine Parts

Engine parts are the critical components that work together to convert fuel into mechanical energy. They range from major structural elements to intricate moving parts, all requiring proper lubrication, cooling, and maintenance.

Core Engine Structure

  • Engine Block: The foundational structure that houses the cylinders and coolant passages.
  • Cylinder Head: Sits on top of the block, sealing the cylinders and housing the valves and spark plugs.
  • Oil Pan: Located at the bottom of the engine, it acts as a reservoir for the motor oil.

Internal Moving Components

  • Pistons & Rings: Cylindrical components that move up and down in the engine block. Piston rings provide a seal between the piston and cylinder wall.
  • Connecting Rods: Connect the pistons to the crankshaft, transferring force.
  • Crankshaft: Converts the up-and-down motion of the pistons into rotational motion to drive the wheels.
  • Flywheel: A heavy wheel attached to the crankshaft that smooths out the engine's power delivery.

Valve Train & Timing

  • Camshaft: Controls the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves.
  • Valves: Allow air and fuel to enter the combustion chamber and exhaust gases to exit.
  • Timing Chain/Belt: Keeps the camshaft and crankshaft synchronized so the valves open and close at the exact right time.

Maintenance & Accessories

  • Gaskets: Seals placed between engine components (like the cylinder head and block) to prevent leaks.
  • Spark Plugs: Provide the electric spark needed to ignite the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber.
  • Oil Filter: Removes contaminants from the engine oil to keep internal parts lubricated and clean.
